Learn how to thread a needle. Keep the following points in mind

The length of the thread should be about 18 inches.

Don’t break the thread abruptly as it leaves nebulous ends. That may create a problem when you try to insert it in the eye of the needle. It may also damage the thread.

It is better to cut the thread on a slant for easier threading.

Hold the needle firmly using your fore finger and thumb in one hand and the thread in the other hand. Then guide it through the needle eye.

The ending and the beginning of the threads should not be noticeable. The more inconspicuous it is, the better it looks.

Before you start your hand stitching work, make sure that the beginning of the thread is secured. That can be done either by tying a knot or by making a couple of stitches in the same location of the fabric.

Make sure, when a knot is tied to start a row of stitching, it should be very minute, locked, and tidy.

In order to tie a knot loop the thread between thumb and forefinger and then pull the loop to the last portion of the thread to tighten.

Threads should be secured when you are done with the stitching work. There are a number of ways to do that. Usually few small stitches are done on the same location or you can also secure it by looping the thread around the needle.

Before the advent of sewing machines stitching was done by hands. Hand stitching used to be the only way used to stitch clothes. However, in recent times, sewing projects are done with the help of modern sewing machines capable of doing all kinds of stitches. Yet in some cases, hand stitching is used in some sectors which does not require elaborate stitches or where custom stitches are required. Hand stitching is also sometimes used as finishing techniques on fabrics and other cloth materials. The person who does the sewing should know the various stitches on different items as well as the accessories that you need for the project.

Depending on the need and the purpose, some stitching techniques use a single thread while you may also use double threads for some.

Double threads: These are generally used for purposes like stitching buttons or securing hooks. Your stitches need to be strong to hold a button or a hook to a cloth. To bring in that strength double threads are applied.

Long threads: This should be avoided because they get tangled easily and tend to break often. Some sewing experts recommend threads of length varying between 18 to 24 inches. However, it also depends on the quality of thread being used. Higher the tension created while stitching; greater would be the risk of breaking.

An Ideal Hand Stitch

The following are the points to remember for an ideal hand stitch.

Clean finishes with no loose threads hanging here and there indicates neat work and your expertise. Even a beginner can be neat as long as he/she concentrates on his work.

The length of the stitches should be same all throughout unless you have purposely made any changes.

Stitches should not create any pucker on any side of the fabric.

The project must appear neat and tidy. For that you have to try and hide the thread ends in-between fabric layers. A pro at hand stitching can perform smoothly but once you read through our articles even you would be able to stitch like a pro.

One of the many wonderful ways to showcase your flair and creativity is through sewing.

It is regarded as a form of art where talented hands can produce attractive clothes, home décor and various items, many of which are really unique in their own way. You should have the basic knowledge before you start a sewing project. Thus, invest some time and effort to learn how to sew and get acquainted with the basic sewing techniques.

Sewing Steps for Beginners

Given below are some of the basic sewing tips and techniques to soak your feet of learning.

1. The first and foremost thing is arranging all your materials. In case you are using a sewing machine get ready with it and make sure you thread it properly.

This will help you avoid any harassment throughout the sewing process.

2. Prepare your sewing pattern and guide. Read the directives before you start working on anything. It is crucial that you understand the pattern and guide before cutting the fabric. Once cut, you cannot re-do the cutting. So beware.

3. The fabric should be washed and dried beforehand. This is generally done to make sure that it will not reduce in size after you have finished sewing the entire clothing. You can also iron your clothing, prior to sewing, once it is dry. Also, cutting fabrics which have been dried and ironed becomes comparatively easier.

4. After having cut the fabric, firmly pin the pieces of your pattern onto the fabric. Then cut the edges uniformly using a sharp scissor. Make sure that the edges are evenly cut.

5. For you to comfortably and easily stitch the pieces of pattern, apply longhand stitches. This will simplify the piecing the edges of the fabric. Using bright colored threads to baste your pieces together may be a good idea.

6. Sew your pieces at the edges and then remove the basting thread once you finish.

Be patient to learn the basics of sewing. This may be time-consuming, but once you get the hang of it, sewing will seam easier. It is a fun-filled journey and you will surely enjoy while doing it!
